Manchester United Soccer Schools’ Champions Day at Old Trafford was a great occasion for the invited 66 youngsters and 20 coaches taking part.
Last Sunday, the budding young footballers – each selected from a player development course held in the UK and Ireland in 2009 – got the opportunity of a lifetime to play on the famous OT pitch and were even joined by former United player Quinton Fortune.
The former South Africa international played 128 games for the Reds, scoring 11 goals, and was back on his old stomping ground to join in with the skills sessions and small-sided games. He was also interviewed by compére for the day – OT’s matchday announcer Alan Keegan – and discussed the forthcoming World Cup finals in his home country.
Mike Neary, Soccer Schools’ UK and Ireland program manager hailed the day a great success, commenting: “We were really impressed with not just the attitude of the players but their level of technical ability as well. Having Quinton in the sessions was a real bonus for the kids participating as they had the opportunity of training with a former United professional at Old Trafford as well. Well done to everyone.”
The coaching workshop with the 20 coaches from around the country gave them an insight into how MUSS coaching courses are delivered and then put them into practice on the pitch in a coaching demonstration. And youngsters got to practice their pass it on skills, many of which were filmed - look out for those on the website link here.
