It was a quiet transfer deadline day for the Reds, with the only piece of business at Old Trafford seeing young midfielder Tom Cleverley joining Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan.

The England Under-21 international impressed in spells with Leicester City and Watford in the last two seasons, but it was initially expected that he would remain at Old Trafford to fight for his place in the first-team.

But it was decided that regular Premier League football was more beneficial to his development, and he will now gain experience week in, week out with Roberto Martinez's side.

Latics boss Martinez told Wigan's official website: “Tom is a very exciting young player and we are delighted he his coming to us. He can play in a number of positions and will provide us with some good new options, and add great competition to the squad.

"We have been watching him for some time and feel he is the right sort of player to join our squad; young, hungry, desperate to play for the club in the Premier League and to grow with us."

Cleverley, who is on England U21 duty, will join up with his new team-mates later this week and could make his Latics debut against Sunderland - facing fellow United loanee Danny Welbeck - on Saturday, 11 September.
