Reds goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was glad to return to action for United against Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.

The Dutchman hadn't played a competitive match in the 2009/10 campaign after breaking a bone in his hand and one of his fingers during the pre-season friendly shoot-out defeat to Bayern Munich in July.

Ever the perfect professional, Edwin was a little disappointed not to keep a clean sheet in the 2-1 victory over the Trotters. But he's glad to back nonetheless.

“When you come back you always want to keep a clean sheet,” he said. “But the most important thing is the three points and we hung on and deserved the win. I enjoyed the game and it was good to get another victory.”

Van der Sar was busy, especially in the latter stages of the match when Bolton pulled a goal back and then threatened to get an equaliser.

“For long periods we were the better team and created the most chances,” he added. “Jussi Jaaskelainen played spectacularly again and pulled off some fantastic saves.

“At 2-0 the game wasn’t over and Bolton scored a scrappy goal – we didn’t defend well on that one. We didn’t panic but the game should have been done and dusted. Instead, we were left to fight to hold onto the lead. We had to dig a bit deeper than we maybe expected after 50 or 60 minutes.”

United's no.1 is expected to keep his place in the team as the Reds take on CSKA Moscow at the Luzhniki Stadium - the place where Edwin so famously saved Nicolas Anelka's penalty to win the Champions League against Chelsea back in May 2008.
