Edwin van der Sar is looking forward to heading out to Asia on Thursday as United prepare to play in front of their loyal Far East fanbase on a four-game tour of the region.

A strong Reds squad will depart Manchester on Thursday morning to play matches against a Malaysian XI, Indonesia Super League XI, FC Seoul and Hangzhou Greentown.

The United players have fond memories of their last visit to Asia, having won the Club World Cup in Japan back in December.

"The last time we were in Asia was a great occasion because we became world champions and everyone is looking forward to going out there again this week," says Edwin.

Old Trafford may be packed out most weeks with loyal local fans, but Edwin says these summer trips are an opportunity for equally devoted United fans from the Far East to see the Reds up close.

"It’s a great feeling to see the joy on people’s faces when we’re in Asia," he adds.

"The fans are so fanatical and dedicated – some wait outside our hotel all day and night. Many of them don’t get the chance to see us very often so it’s great that we can over there and visit them."

After 11 days on the Asia Tour, United return to Europe for a four-team tournament in Munich, taking on Boca Juniors and then either Bayern Munich or AC Milan.

A clash with Spanish side Valencia awaits at Old Trafford on 5 August, followed by the Community Shield against Chelsea at Wembley before the season properly kicks off with the first league match against Birmingham on 16 August.
