Ryan Giggs believes winning the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Players’ Player of the Year is one of his biggest personal achievements in his 19-year playing career.
The 35-year-old midfielder was handed the award at an awards ceremony in London on Sunday night.
Giggs, has never previously collected the accolade – voted by fellow professionals – but he beat four others Reds, Nemanja Vidic, Edwin van der Sar, Rio Ferdinand and Cristiano Ronaldo, and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard to claim this year’s trophy.
"It's the best award to have as it's voted by your fellow players," Giggs said after collecting the trophy. "It's right up there with the best personal accolades.
"I've been fortunate to win a lot of trophies - I won the young player award twice - but this is the big one."
The award is even more remarkable as Giggs, previously world-renowned as a flying left winger, has changed his game to become a central midfielder this season - and he's done a fantastic job of it.
Giggs is keen to acknowledge the part Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson has played in his glittering career.
"I've been so fortunate to have such a great career in so many great teams. It's not even worth thinking about what it would have been like without the manager," he said.
"He has been massive in my career, from when I first met him when I was 13. That's over 20 years and he knows me better than anyone and our relationship has been brilliant and just gets better."
