Ryan Giggs says United will turn in a much-improved performance against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final, second leg at Old Trafford.

The Reds lost 2-1 in Munich on Tuesday night, despite having led 1-0 after only the second minute. United are behind in the tie, but the Welsh winger is upbeat ahead of the return leg in Manchester next Wednesday.

“I'm confident that we can raise our game at home," he said. "We have done it many times before and we’ll have to do it again."

Giggs came on as a second-half substitute at the Allianz Arena. He'd seen the Reds take an early lead through Wayne Rooney but then surrender it after Franck Ribery's deflected free-kick and Ivica Olic's 92nd minute winner.

The veteran Reds midfielder feels that scoring early isn't always beneficial, as proved to be the case.

“Usually you would take an early goal, but it can work against you," he said. "We would usually try and catch the opposition on the counter attack but we didn’t keep the ball anywhere near as well as we are capable of.

“We didn’t play well and gave the ball away far too cheaply, but you have to give credit to Bayern who made it very difficult for us."
