The season ended for Sir Alex Ferguson’s team on Wednesday night in Rome - sadly not with the result we were hoping for - but for 72 youngsters from across the UK and Ireland there’s a very special event in store for them on Sunday (31 May).
Champions Day 2009, being held on the Old Trafford pitch, will see youngsters selected from Manchester United Soccer Schools’ two and three-day coaching courses tread the famous turf at the Theatre of Dreams.
The lucky youngsters were selected based upon their Soccer Schools’ skills test and United Vision scores (where all elements of the player development model are rated), on the courses they undertook over the past 12 months. The selection process meant that it was not necessarily the best standard players, but rather those who demonstrate all the different aspects of what they’d learnt that were invited to attend.
Mike Neary, UK and Ireland Programme Manager for Manchester United Soccer Schools, is looking forward to the day and delighted to be able to give the youngsters this chance.
“Every player, young and old, dreams of playing at Old Trafford, so we’re really pleased and excited to be able to reward a special group of young players who have shown great qualities on our two and three-day courses held across the UK and Ireland over the past year,” explains Mike.
“They represent the MUSS philosophy of enjoying practising and playing but also demonstrate good attitude, behaviour and discipline, positive communication skills and a great enthusiasm that rubs off on others. We’re looking to encourage the players to go back to their mates and work together with a ball to master the tricks and tips we’ll show them at Champions Day - then let us know how they get on!”
The day promises to be an exciting one for all involved with coaching sessions on the pitch, a photo opportunity with the Premier League trophy and then a tour of Old Trafford.
Another exciting feature of the day will be the launch of our new ‘Pass It On’ campaign, which celebrates Manchester United Soccer Schools’ 10th birthday and gives youngsters 10 new skills to learn and pass on to their friends. Click here for more info.
For Sunday’s lucky attendees, Champions Day 2009 will be one they remember for the rest of their lives. Over the next 12 months the attendees for Champions Day 2010 will be selected from Soccer Schools short courses across the UK and Ireland. For more information on these courses click here.

Good luck to all of those taking part!

Just champion!
