Owen Hargreaves is stepping up his bid to return to first-team action.

Hargreaves' last match for United was against Chelsea in September 2008.

The midfielder, who had a double knee operation and hasn't played for the senior team in 18 months, pulled on the red shirt again for the Reserves last week.

Now he is ready to train with the first team on a full-time basis, and Sir Alex Ferguson hopes to be able to use the 29-year-old during the title run-in.

"Owen is going to be training with the first team and we’ll see where that takes him," the boss says.

"We’re keen to get him back involved because he’s an experienced player and will be a valuable addition for us in the run-in, when having a strong, fit squad is vital."

He was not registered to play in the Champions League knockout stages, but Hargreaves could be used in United's seven remaining league fixtures.
