Michael Owen will miss the rest of the season after being forced to undergo surgery on a hamstring injury - but the Reds striker has pledged to return to action next season in top shape.

The United no.7 will have an operation on Monday and is not expected back in action until the start of the 2010/11 campaign.

"Unfortunately, the specialist says I will miss the end of the season," said the striker.

"I have loved every minute of my first campaign with United and have already enjoyed some memorable moments.

"I am determined to come back at the start of next season in peak condition."

The injury is desperately disappointing for Owen as he looked particularly sharp against Aston Villa in the Carling Cup final, where he'd scored United's first goal, before being forced off the field in the first half.

The injury brings an end to his hopes of making this summer's World Cup in South Africa with England.
