Manchester United might have become champions of England again (for an 18th occasion, for those counting) but this time, as per the last two seasons, the Reds have achieved success with an array of international stars.
Alongside the likes of Englishmen Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick are Dutchman Edwin van der Sar, Frenchman Patrice Evra, Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo and Brazilian Anderson. Sir Alex has assembled a successful side built on a blend of domestic and overseas players, and the result has been plenty of silverware in recent seasons.
The theory goes that footballers only speak one language when out on the pitch – football – but there’s no doubt that there are huge advantages to team mates being able to communicate with each other verbally. In fact, United’s overseas stars have made the effort to speak English and that has led to great camaraderie in the Reds’ dressing room.
Manchester United Soccer Schools have seen the link between football and learning languages, and will be running a number of courses that combine football played the United way and English language tuition this summer.
The residential courses give players the opportunity to develop both areas through the Manchester United experience. There’s a minimum of 20 hours football training each week, with practical sessions on skills and tactics, and workshops on formations, tactics, nutrition and psychology.
Football training is undertaken in the mornings, with English language tuition in the afternoon. Evenings are spent on football workshops or practical training sessions.
There are four venues that will be hosting courses this summer: Clifton College in Bristol, Caterham School in Surrey, Hartpury College near Cheltenham and Queen Ethelburga’s College in York. All provide excellent accommodation in beautiful surroundings, making them the perfect environment in which to combine playing football (the United way) with learning English.
