Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Reserve team followed up winning the Barclays Premier Reserve League North title with a shoot-out victory over Aston Villa in the Reserve League Play-Off Final.
United’s second-string edged an enthralling encounter at Old Trafford, coming back against Aston Villa three times to eventually win 3-2 on penalties.
A Mame Biram Diouf double and a Kiko Macheda penalty kept United in the contest during normal time, but goalkeeper Ben Foster was the shootout hero; making two saves and scoring what proved to be the winning kick.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was understandably delighted to see United’s indefatigable spirit on show in his Reserves' epic victory.
“It always is (dramatic) with United,” Ole told MUTV. “That's part of being a United player. You need talent and skill and all that, but character and attitude are things the manager is always looking for in players.
“They bounced back every single time, they never gave up. That's the history of United and I think today they've shown they can be a part of it. I thought their attitude was brilliant, so they deserve it. The season has been a long one, but they've done fantastically well.”
A big ‘well done’ to the Reserve lads from everyone at Manchester United Soccer Schools.
