Manchester United arrived in Chicago, USA, on Monday for the start of a 19-day, five-match tour of North America.
The Reds’ 22-man squad will spend two days in Chicago for a training camp, before moving on for the first tour match on Friday 16 July against Celtic in Toronto, Canada. The squad will then head to Philadelphia for a meeting with Philadelphia Union on Wednesday 21 July, before travelling to Kansas City to take on the Kansas City Wizards on 25 July.
Next stop is Houston for a match against the MLS All-Stars, before United end the trip with a visit to Guadalajara to take on new signing Javier Hernandez's former club Chivas on 30 July.
The travelling party is made up of seasoned campaigners such as Edwin van der Sar, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, plus promising youngsters like Corry Evans, Ben Amos and Tom Cleverley. Hernandez, nicknamed Chicharito, who impressed for Mexico at the World Cup, will link up with the squad in Houston on 27 July, while United’s other summer addition Chris Smalling (from Fulham, for an disclosed fee) is part of the travelling party.
The latter has already impressed some of his new team mates with Darren Fletcher saying: “Chris has been training for a few days and he’s a big, strong, tall lad. I didn’t realise how young he was until he told me, and I think he’s got great potential for the future. He’s going to be some athlete and when he learns what Manchester United is about he'll become a top player.”
