The Reds began the 2010/11 campaign with a convincing and straightforward 3-0 win over Newcastle at Old Trafford.

With the rest of the Premier League getting underway on Saturday and Sunday, United and Newcastle had to wait until the Monday night to start the new season.

As expected, Newcastle showed plenty of determination on their return to the top-flight very early on in the match. But soon United's dominance shone through.

Everyone at Old Trafford was exciting to catch a glimpse of new signings Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez and Chris Smalling. However, both players were named on the bench and it was one of United's older heads who was pulling the strings and wowing the crowd.

Paul Scholes was on top form once again - as he had been against Chelsea in the Community Shield. It was Scholesy's simple pass who set up Dimitar Berbatov's openning goal, which was soon followed by Darren Fletcher's well-taken close-range effort after good work on the left flank from Nani and Patrice Evra, who provided the cross.

The second 45 minutes was spent camped in the Newcastle half, with Scholes controlling play with his excellent range of passing. Berbatov had several chances to score his second of the match, but it was left to subsitute Ryan Giggs - set up by a stunning, lofted pass from Scholes - to volley in United's third goal of the night.

The goal also means that Welsh wizard Giggs has scored in every Premier League season - a record stretching back to 1992.

New signing Chicharito also came off the bench, replacing Wayne Rooney, to a very warm welcome from the Old Trafford crowd. He might have to wait for his first OT goal, but three was enough to give the Reds a comfortable victory to kick off the new campaign.
