United's Reserves are champions of the Barclays Premier Reserve League North for the first time since 2006.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Warren Joyce's side clinched the title on Tuesday evening when Liverpool, the only side who could catch the Reds, lost to Everton.

The Toffees' late victory leaves Liverpool nine points behind United with only two games to play.

Sir Alex Ferguson praised the work done by Solskjaer and Joyce, saying: "They've done a great job.

"Whenever we’ve appointed a new Reserve team coach, I’ve always explained to them what a difficult job it is because it’s subject to what I need. I may pull out three or four players from a training session or I might say, ‘these players can’t play for you on Thursday because they’re on standby for me on Saturday'. So it’s a difficult job."

There are a number of emerging young talents in the Reds' second string that have caught Sir Alex's eye during an impressive season.

"Some of the players have done very well," he added. "In the 1-0 win against Liverpool, the back four were absolutely brilliant.

"One or two younger players are developing quite well. Gabriel Obertan scored an unbelievable goal. Oliver Norwood and Corry Evans do really well and have a good attitude towards the game. That’s an important thing and Ole and Warren have maintained that attitude right through the team."

The Reds' two remaining league games, against Burnley and Wigan, are now meaningless, but on Thursday United play the final Manchester Senior Cup group game against Manchester City - with a chance for the Reds to retain the trophy once again in the offing.

In May, United will face Aston Villa - winners of the Premier Reserve League South for the third season in a row - in the Barclays Premier Reserve League Playoff at Old Trafford.
