Liverpool are on their worst run of results in 22 years, while table-toppers United have taken 22 points from 27 available this season, but Rio Ferdinand says that form will be unimportant at Anfield on Sunday.
The Reds travel to Liverpool in fine form and full of confidence following two victories already this week, while Rafa Benitez’s side are fighting to stay in title contention after a dismal run of four successive defeats.
But those results only add to the danger of a backlash for the Reds, says Rio Ferdinand, who is keen to guard against any complacency in the United dressing room.
“I think form goes out of the window in these games,” Rio told MUTV ahead of this weekend’s game.
“We all know that when there's a big rivalry between two teams, whether it's a derby or a big cup clash, form doesn't come into it.”
Victory for United would maintain the Reds' position at the Premier League's summit and boost hopes of recording a record 19th league title success in May.
“It all comes down to who performs best on the day and that's what we're looking to do,” says Rio.
