Paul Scholes was delighted to score his 100th league goal - but the modest midfielder was pleased more that his winner against Wolves earned United three vital points in the title race.

The 35-year-old midfield maestro created space in the box and then struck from close range with less than 20 minutes remaining.

While delighted to reach the landmark in league action (he's also now just two short of 150 United goals in all competitions), Scholes preferred to talk about the result.

“It was a big game," he said. "We knew it was going to be a tough place to come. Conditions weren’t ideal for football and they are a physical team who made it difficult for us.

“The pitch wasn’t great and I don’t think Wolves were too interested in playing football – they just tried to stop us playing, which made it hard, but that’s the sort of thing you come up against in these games.

“You need to score goals to win games and thankfully the ball fell to me and I managed to put it away. I’ve been on 99 goals for a while so it was nice to get my 100th and I’m pleased with the achievement.”
