Sir Alex Ferguson’s men may have fallen one point short in the quest for a fourth consecutive Premier League title, but, after praising champions Chelsea for their achievement, United’s players and staff promised to be back giving their all in 2010/11.
After the curtain had come down on the top flight season, Sir Alex congratulated Carlo Ancelotti and his Chelsea players for their triumph before turning his attentions to United’s next task.
“We know how hard it is to win the title – it’s the hardest league in the world and we’ve won it for the last three years,” he said. “That was fantastic and the players have been great. We’ll come back next year, that’s exactly what Manchester United do.”
That determination was also voiced by his players, too. Nani admitted feeling desperately disappointed after so narrowly missing out on the title, but was adamant that the Reds will be back stronger and even more determined.
“We hoped for the best result for us today, but it didn’t happen,” said the Portuguese after the United’s 4-0 victory over Stoke City. “We still have to be confident about next season. Next year we will be fantastic because we will show that we are strong and we will work hard. We’ll be strong next season. United is a very strong club, we have a very strong mentality. We didn’t win the league this season, but next time we will.”
Ever-present in the league campaign was full-back Patrice Evra, and he described missing out on another title success as “a sad day”.
“We lost too many games this season. We shouldn’t have lost to Chelsea here and then we drew with Blackburn away and dropped some more points. There were other games we lost when we shouldn’t have, like Burnley at the beginning of the season. I think that was the key, but still I congratulate Chelsea for winning the league.
“But I want to win every year and next year will be the same. Every year I play for Man United I want to be the best.”
