A young Reds side lost to Besiktas JK on Wednesday night, but for Sir Alex Ferguson it was very much a case of short-term loss for long-term gain.
United have already progressed to the last 16 of the competition, so it was a game the Reds could effectively afford to lose. So, for him, the main positives were the valuable experience – and vital lessons dished out – to his fledgling troops.
A deflected goal gave the Turkish team the points but the boss was impressed with what he saw from a number of his young charges.
“I’m disappointed, of course,” he told MUTV. “But it was an opportunity to play some younger players and I’m not disappointed in them. Gabriel Obertan is 20, Danny Welbeck is 19 tomorrow, Federico Macheda is 18.
“They all showed potential and playing in these games gives them incentive to improve themselves. They know they’ll get that opportunity at this club. The club’s history is based on producing young players who can excite and these players can all excite.”

Valuable experience
