Following the FA Cup victory against Liverpool, Sir Alex Ferguson expressed his delight at the performances this week of two of the club's young defenders.

Jonny Evans deputised impressively for the injured Nemanja Vidic in the third-round win against our Merseyside rivals, just days after Chris Smalling impressed in the 2-1 league win against Stoke at Old Trafford.

While Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic remain the Reds’ first-choice pairing at centre-half, Sir Alex is encouraged that going into the business end of the season he has two able deputies with bright futures at Manchester United.

“Jonny was excellent against Liverpool,” said Sir Alex. “I was pleased with him. He tired a little before the end, that’s why we brought Chris on. But it’s been a great week in the sense that Chris played against Stoke and I was able to play Jonny on Sunday. They both need games and these two boys are excellent players.”

While United skipper Vidic is expected to recover from a knock in time to face Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Sunday, Sir Alex knows that he’s two replacements desperate for prove themselves again.
