Manchester United’s Under-18 side beat Portsmouth in the third round of the FA Youth Cup at Altrincham FC on Monday night, and now face West Ham United in the fourth round of the competition.
Goals from Paul Pogba, Will Keane and a Tom Fry own goal, saw the youngsters race into a 3-0 lead, although Pompey rallied in the last seven minutes to give the Reds a late scare.
It’s eight years since the United U18s side last lifted the FA Youth Cup and Paul McGuinness’s young side are looking to bring the trophy to the club for a record 10th time.
The Reds took 29 minutes to break the deadlock, courtesy of a blistering strike from French midfielder Pogba. The lead was doubled when Pompey keeper Fry punched a corner into his own net. And it was three when striker Will Keane fired in a left-foot shot.
Keane then had two goals chalked off for offside, before Portsmouth rallied late on with a brace for Ryan Williams.
It was too little too late though, and the Reds now face West Ham at Upton Park on Wednesday 19 January in the fourth round.
