United’s Under-18 side will take on Chelsea in the FA Youth Cup semi-finals after a stirring quarter-final victory at Anfield.

Paul McGuinness’s young side battled back from 2-0 down to win 3-2, thanks to a brace from Ravel Morrison and a Larnell Cole penalty – all scored at the Kop end.

The Reds were up against a Liverpool side that had notched 55 goals in their last 15 games, including nine in the last round victory over Southend. But the Reds are on an impressive run, too, having seen off Portsmouth, West Ham and Newcastle to progress in the competition.

Games between United and Liverpool have a real edge to them at any level, and there were four red cards shown in a competitive and at times fiery contest. Liverpool’s Stephen Sama and Conor Coady were dismissed for the hosts, Paul Pogba and Tyler Blackett for the Reds. But those should not detract from what was a great game of football.

Adam Morgan had put the hosts 2-0 up, only for United to stage a stunning recovery. Larnell Cole netted from the spot after a foul on Ryan Tunnicliffe, then the impressive Ravel Morrison blasted an equaliser, then volleyed a winner four minutes from time.

The Reds are seeking to win the Youth Cup for what would be a record 10th time, and now face a two-legged semi-final against Chelsea. Dates to be confirmed.
