Be it in his natural berth on the right wing or in his slot as a makeshift right-back, Antonio Valencia is simply happy to be in Sir Alex Ferguson's plans.

After a spate of injuries to the Reds' regular defenders, the Ecuadorian has filled in as a moonlighting full-back in the early stages of the 2011/12 season - and he has enjoyed the experience to date.

"I’ve played at right-back a few times and I’ve enjoyed the position," Valencia told United's official Spanish website. "I respect regular players in that position as they pick up quite a few knocks.

"But I have also played back on the wing this season and I’m happy anywhere on the field. I hope to be ready and to play well when the boss calls me."

Antonio's defensive duties have allowed Sir Alex to play three wingers in his team, with Ashley Young and Nani also excelling, while the presence of Ryan Giggs and Ji-sung Park means United are well-stocked for wide-men.

Though such competition inevitably means disappointment for some, Valencia sees the challenge as a valuable means of galvanising the squad's performance levels.

"It's always important to have a healthy competition within the team and this is the situation now, given all the wingers we have at United," he said. "It’s very important and a real boost for me to be back in the team. Every time I play for United it’s wonderful."
