Former Reds captain Gary Neville, one of Manchester United’s living legends and a one-club man, visited the Manchester United Soccer Schools program in Mumbai recently to interact with local school kids and coaches.
Manchester United Soccer Schools based at Cooperage Ground was recently launched in tie-up with WIFA in November last year by Manchester United CEO David Gill and since then registrations for the coaching modules have been increasing as the start date approaches. Gary Neville paid a visit in his capacity as a club ambassador to spread the message of playing football ‘the United way’ and was very impressed by the passion for the game amongst the local kids.
“The enthusiasm shown by these kids has been fantastic,” said Gary. “Young players taking part in the Soccer Schools programs are taught using the same principles that United players like myself, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes were taught in the Academy and as players.”
“I did a little bit of the session with the kids, spoke to the coaches and understood what it is that they’re looking to do over here. The plan the coaches have shared is impressive. Apart from the technical skills that youngsters here will learn, it’s also about developing confident individuals who will learn about tactics, healthy lifestyles and social skills.”
Manchester United Soccer Schools plan to run a number of courses from the Mumbai base over the coming years, placing great importance on football development but also on enjoying the game. It’s a message that has been taken all around the world by MUSS over the past decade.
It will train young footballers to play the ‘United way’, providing an opportunity for them to develop their football and personal skills in a positive, safe and fun learning environment.
Neville, a one-club man, captained Manchester United for five years (2005-2010) before calling time on an illustrious playing career on 2 February 2011, almost 20 years after making his debut for United. He achieved numerous honours during his career, including eight league titles, three FA cups and a Champions League winners medal. He is also England’s most capped right-back. Since retiring from football at the end of the 2010-11 season, Neville has gone into punditry and is a commentator for Sky Sports.
